Winter Weather Driving Tips

Chief Dennis P. Moffett and the Mt. Laurel Police Department would like to furnish the following information to the motoring public:

The National Weather Service issues Travelers' Advisories when the potential for severe winter weather makes driving dangerous.

Inclement weather (rain, snow and fog) safety and driving tips:

  • Thoroughly clean ice and snow from all windows to improve visibility.
  • Adjust your speed according to the conditions of the roadway.
  • Allow more than the recommended space between vehicles.
  • Do not make sudden moves with the steering wheel, brakes or accelerator.
  • Avoid driving through deep water.
  • Keep your headlights and taillights clean.
  • Use only low beams when driving in fog.
  • Avoid driving while fatigued
  • Always use your seatbelt, "It's the Law".
  • Never warm up your vehicle in the garage.
  • Ensure that your tires are properly inflated.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full.
  • Consider putting together a Winter Driving Kit: Shovel, Snow brush, Flashlight, Ice scraper, Jumper cables, blanket, first aid kit and warning devices.
  • Conduct a pre-season check up, to include battery, belts, hoses, wiper blades, tires and brakes.
