The Mount
Laurel Township Police Department announce police patrols will
be checking for seat belt usage from May 19 through June 1,
2008.
The Mount
Laurel Township Police Department is participating in the
annual seat belt mobilization “Click It or Ticket” Seatbelt
campaign for 2008 to keep families safe on the highways by
stepping up enforcement of adult seat belt usage and child
passenger laws.
In
cooperation with the Department of Transportation and the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the
Mobilization is a nationally coordinated effort by law
enforcement to protect children by cracking down on drivers
who don’t buckle up kids.
Major
intersections through out the township will be monitored. All
drivers and residents are urged to comply with state law and
to ensure that all occupants of their vehicle are safely
buckled up. Additionally, Officers will increase patrols in
high-traffic areas through out town.
State Law allows police
to stop vehicles for seatbelt violations as a primary offense.
Children up to age 8 or 80 pounds must ride in a safety or
booster seat in the rear seat of the vehicle. If there is no
rear seat, the child must sit in the front seat secured by a
child safety seat or booster seat. Children under age 8 who
weigh more than 80 pounds must wear a seat belt anywhere in
the vehicle. All other children and adult passengers must be
properly restrained by a fastened safety seat belt.
Specific
questions about proper mounting and use of child restraint
devices may be directed to the Community Policing Unit at
(856) 234-1414 Ext. 532. Buckle up and have a safe trip.
